Learn Songs

When you move to Nashville, it’s inevitable that at some point you’ll have to accurately learn 40 songs in 2 days for a gig. And if you’re lucky you’ll get called in to do a session and have to play a song perfectly having only listened to it once. I’ve been fortunate enough to survive both of those situations many times, and in this course I show you exactly how every professional musician I know tackles that scenario.

Course Outline (click to expand):

Learn Songs

The hardest part of being a professional musician is learning new songs quickly and accurately. In this course Jim learns a song front to back in real time on the first listen, then shows and explains the chart he wrote on that first listen.

Learn Songs course outline:

Part 1 – First Listen and Playthrough

Listening to a song for the first time, making a chart while listening, explaining the chart and playing the song.

Part 2 – Explaining and Refining

Going through the chart and explaining what everything on it means, and why certain choices are made when it comes to turning ink on paper back into music.

Part 3 – Second Listen and Playthrough

Tapping into the specific textures of the song and showing how to notate them, to supplement the chart in a way that allows you more accuracy to the recorded parts. A final play-through of the song trying to get as close to the recording as possible.

Total course time – 1hr 15min 43sec
